Quick fact check on Boris Johnson's latest Twitter video.

Claim: UK will take back control of "our money, our borders, our laws as soon as we come out of the EU".

Reality: UK remains in 11-month transition, paying into EU budget, following EU law, inc free movement ppl.
Claim: UK will negotiate "big free trade deal” with EU with no political alignment.

Reality: UK gov has no plans for close alignment, but will have to adhere to core EU standards on workers’ rights, environment, consumer protection to ensure zero tariffs and zero quotas.
Claim: UK did “new withdrawal agreement in less than three months" and can get "fantastic" trade deal by end 2020.

Reality: EU says timetable difficult but doable, but pending ratification in national and regional European parliaments.
And depends on your definition of "fantastic".

Basic free trade deal of kind pursued by Boris Johnson would reduce GDP by between 2.3% and 7% per capita within a decade after Brexit according to @UKandEU.
@UKandEU Bigger point. Johnson video full of this: “fantastic new deal… a Super Canada Plus arrangement….Lets Get Brexit done”.

Reality is submerged behind these kind of misleading and meaningless slogans that suggest the next phase will be painless and over soon. Far from it.

Michel Barnier leaked recording is a great get by @joncstone but what struck me is how similar his private remarks are to the public ones.

In the recording Barnier says 11 months “improbable” for a global agreement, but the EU will do everything it can for the bare minimum. This is basically what he said in November...2
when he said the two sides could not do everything, but a basic free trade agreement was possible. Basic is the key word.
It sounds to me his thinking unchanged. 3.

EU member states don't want to be bounced into Boris Johnson's 11-month trade deal timetable.

That's why the latest version of EU leaders' summit conclusions have scaled back promises of speediness.

Many member states thought sent the wrong signal, that EU was signed up to Boris Johnson’s 11-month timetable.

The EU is still promising to be speedy, but no one is gung-ho about trade deal in 11 mths. Far from it: many dismayed that Johnson has boxed himself in by ruling out extension of transition period. Remember original transition was deemed too short when it was 21 months.

Sajid Javid tells @RidgeOnSunday that an EU-UK trade deal can be "done certainly by the end of next year, of that I have no doubt".

Senior EU diplomat this week: "Not in my wildest dreams would I imagine that a possibility."
@RidgeOnSunday Two canards in Sajid Javid comments. 1. He suggests the 11-month timetable possible because "most of the work has already been done".
But that's not true. UK government has made preparations, but trade talks have not even begun.
@RidgeOnSunday Second canard: Sajid Javid suggests talks will go quickly because "the EU and the UK are aligned, we agree on all the key principles". But it's the de-alignment that's going to be so difficult. That's why the EU diplomat cannot imagine wrapping up talks in 11 months.

Seems to me like we already have control over all but a vanishingly small percentage of our money - look at UK annual tax and spend.

The increased support for a ‘no deal’ Brexit is the ultimate failure of the Leave movement. It’s the inevitable consequence of the refusal to grasp details, come to terms with complexity & coalesce around a plan. Compromise can be frustrating. So instead they will have a tantrum.
Some Brexiteers advocated sensible solutions. The EFTA/EEA solution gained a lot of traction in the years before the ref. Even Farage had promoted it & countless others. See Farage below from 2011 essentially making the ‘Liberal Leave’ case!

or 'when we leave the EU we will take back control of our money, our laws and our borders'. All of which is based on fallacy - claim of net out-flow of money has been demonstrated clearly many times, we elect our MEPs and the MPs who debate the EU regs and we have border controls
Astonishingly disdainful way she thinks of UK workers - they will be trained for the low skilled jobs currently done by people from EU27 countries, but we will still allow people in if they will have salary of £50k. She had no plan for immediate recruitment e.g. for care homes
