Trump "said he believes Mr. Atkinson, whom he appointed in 2017, has been disloyal” according to a source. That is arguably *the whole point* of an Inspector General: NOT to be "loyal” to an agency or administration that might be embarrassed by misconduct they report.
That’s why they’re an independent office outside the normal agency chain of command: To give them greater latitude to be “disloyal” to particular institutions or political actors (and instead loyal to the law and Constitution).
