Take it back to ‘64, moving to the right isn’t exclusive to fiscal policy, it’s a function of the White electorate (on both the L and R) continually seeking to distinguish itself from the multicultural coalition that built the civil rights movement & has kept it going ever since.
Every fiscal policy and trade agreement tied to the alt-left’s “center right neoliberalism ruined everything” thesis was implemented on the strength of the White voting majority’s unwillingness to extend the American dream & equal rights to women, gays, POC, the sick & the poor.
Pretending that the last 55 YEARS have been an abject failure for the Democratic Party simply b/c it lost the White majority to the GOP’s Southern Strategy is a form of erasure that eschews incremental change for Black ppl b/c it didn’t center White ppl.
In other words, the White voting majority didn’t get anything tangible from the CRA/VRA besides having to share the pie w/folk they thought (still think) shouldn’t have any of it. They’ve avoided the D coalition since b/c those clearly defined planks didn’t center Whiteness™️.
But don’t just take my word for it, read it straight from St. Bernie’s mouth. #weakassunreliableallies
Keep in mind that by this same alt-left “reasoning” the historic economic prosperity of the 90s must now be labeled an “abject failure of center right neoliberalism”, therefore any benefit it actually extended to historically marginalized people is moot.
BTW this is also how Black voters suddenly became “neoliberal corporate shills” for supporting Hillary in ‘16, they hoped superpredator propaganda was gonna give us amnesia for how *feasible*, incremental socioeconomic change in the 90s helped us build onto our middle class.
None of that feasible, incremental change mattered to them b/c it didn’t put them on a path to no longer being “temporarily embarrassed millionaires”, which is ultimately what so many Independents and White “moderates” are still stark raving mad about today.
This is also how an after school program aimed at helping working families becomes “neoliberalism” to the alt-left. If a policy seeks to help and lift up people below their privileged social strata, they completely lose interest in being “progressive”. 🥴 vice.com/en_us/article/…
Bottom line is these people keep telling on themselves but folk don’t want to believe them the first or the umpteenth time because doing so requires decentering themselves and they don’t know how to and STILL don’t want to learn. Period.
