Amazing encounter with a short eared owl at #YoloBypass tonight. #Birds #BirdPhotography #Owls

My daughter asked me to drop her off to meet a friend in town and so I said sure and grabbed my camera bag thinking I could swing by #YoloBypass for a few minutes. And so I did. 1/n
I got there around 3 PM and the light was getting nice and I headed towards the area where I had seen a short eared owl a few weeks ago. After seeing a few birds here and there I saw a car pulled over up ahead and I approached slowly. 2/n
The person in the car waved me forward and pointed ahead. I got next to the car and the woman in the car said "There is a short eared owl up ahead on the ground.' After scanning for a bit I found it and took a few pics.
Then a car approached form the other direction, slowly. The owl took off as they neared and i got a few good pics of it taking off.
Then the car drove by and the woman and I slowly drove along and had another encounter with the owl. It had landed again. Again I got some good pics.
And again a car approached from the other direction - this time really slowly. The sun was in their eyes so I could tell they we having trouble seeing what we were looking at. And they slowly drove right at the owl. They were going like 2 MPH so eventually the owl took off again
The woman in the car turned around behind us and the three of us slowly drove down the road looking for the owl. And I got another set of pics this time flying
And some more
And a few more
And a couple more flying
And then it landed again
And so it went. For about 20 minutes. Finally it took off towards Sacramento. The three of us chatted for a bit. And then I headed off. What an experience.

Over the last few days, I have spent some time digging into the sordid connections between rapist / pedophile Jeffrey Epstein and various groups at @harvard e.g.,
I did this in part b/c, as a member of the scientific community, as a @harvard alum, as an evolutionary biologist (an area Jeffrey Epstein funded like group of @DrMANowak), the way this community sucked up to, palled around w/ & propped up Epstein, makes me sick
And I also did it b/c I was inspired by others who were relentless in publicizing the seedy underbelly of STEM (and other's) connections to Jeffrey Epstein - people like @xeni, @monaeltahawy @KirstyStricklan @jkbjournalist @dearsarah @rebeccawatson and others

I have a love-hate relationship with the Common (or Ring-necked) pheasant, a species native to Asia and perhaps SE Europe but introduced in its MILLIONS to the UK. Here's a brief thread on this species and what it means for us in the UK... #birds #ornithology
Across the British countryside, the Common pheasant is ubiquitous, typically being the only 'large groundbird' you might see. Lone males - often calling loudly (gogOK!) - are commonly seen, as are groups of females and juveniles. They're everywhere in agricultural landscapes.
Because they look great - they're attractive, large, and represent a body shape we don't see in other commonly encountered British birds (more on that in a minute) - I think we mostly enjoy their presence in the land here...

1/ The bottom line from the DOJ IG report is that Comey did not follow DOJ guidelines but also did not disseminate classified material or commit another crime.

The IG faults Comey for not following DOJ policy. I’m not sure history will do so.

2/ Comey faced an extraordinary situation. The President of the United States asked him for his “loyalty” and then asked him to drop a criminal investigation of his friend.

In the face of Presidential corruption, Comey took extraordinary steps.
3/ Yes, it’s not normal to create memos of your conversations with the President and then cause portions of them to be released in order to trigger appointment of a Special Counsel.

But this was Comey’s response to being fired after he refused Trump’s offer to act corruptly.
