Appalling to see how the Tories are using our #LandForTheMany report to scaremonger. First, these are *recommendations* to Labour and not Labour Party policy. But even if our report did represent party policy, the Tories are grossly misrepresenting its proposals:
1) the Tories claim Labour will introduce a ‘Movers Tax’, selectively quoting our report as evidence. In fact we *rejected* the idea of taxing the capital gains on main residences, and instead follow @IPPR & @resfoundation in calling for an overhaul of inheritance tax system.
2) the Tories claim Labour will introduce a ‘Homes Tax', and are making wild assertions about what this will cost average households. In fact, we recommended a Progressive Property Tax to replace council tax which would result in LOWER rates of taxation for most properties ->->
->and we even discuss a regionally specifically tax free allowance to ensure that the tax changes leave ‘a large majority of households better off, and boost average disposable incomes for the least wealthy half of population.' See p33
landforthemany.uk/wp-content/upl…
3) Unsurprisingly, the Tories make no mention of our proposal that the Progressive Property Tax should be accompanied by a phasing out of Stamp Duty for people buying homes to live in themselves, on the grounds that 'it unfairly penalises people who need to move house'.
How can we stop the Tories getting away with these lies?
And I should add that there are many many more absurd misrepresentations of Labour Party policy on costofcorbyn.com - like the idea that the aspiration for a 4 day week will be achieved by giving every worker a ‘taxpayer funded day off each week’ from 2020... ->
-> when surely the idea is to empower workers to negotiate a *fair share* of the benefits of their increased productivity, in the form of higher hourly wages and reduced working hours *if workers want this*. Isn't that right @Labour4DayWeek?
