Typically, the first response to this type of confrontation is the emergence of anxiety and an attempt to restructure the narcissistic defenses/fantasies to rationalize the new situation, often at the cost of creating even more of an irrational distance from reality. 3/4
If those attempts fail, anxiety leads into having to face inner emptiness and despair, with emergence of significant and at times malignantly severe depression. 4/4
