Ok, here is where I am re: impeachment.

The case has been made. Trump is guilty. Both Rs and Ds know it. Rs will not convict in the Senate.

Doing more to try to change their minds will not so anything.

That is not fatal.

Democrats could try to press on and enforce subpoenas. They could try to press for the testimony of Pompeo, Mulvaney, et al.

But they shouldn’t.

They should bring this to a vote, impeach Trump in the House and let the Senate do what we know they will.

Let them hastily acquit.

In parallel though... AFTER impeaching in the House... they should press their cases in court.

While it will take months, they will get some of the things they’ve asked for.

And each one will affirm Trump’s guilt.

Dems can than use that proof to spend 2020 hammering the message that Trump is indeed guilty and Republicans covered up his guilt.

Our best case, a conviction in the Senate, was never likely.

The second-best case is convincing a majority of voters that Trump is guilty...

...and Republicans were corrupt in helping cover it up and let him off.

This is an inverse of Benghazi. In that debacle, Repubs used an endless drumbeat of lies to smear Clinton.

It worked.

Now Ds can use an endless drumbeat even after an impeachment vote to do batter Trump.

Don’t invest the entirety of your hopes and energy in the outcome of the Senate trial.

Dems can get exactly what they need done even with an acquittal in the Senate by bringing the proceedings to a close but making the story live on.

That’s just fine for our purposes.
