/11 @NHSEngland has today announced new temporary, rest of 2019/20, scheme to address current NHS pensions issues affecting senior clinicians: england.nhs.uk/pensions/. Our media comment here: nhsproviders.org/news-blogs/new…. One of my usual twitter threads giving more detailed thoughts.
/11 @NHSProviders and trusts have been arguing for a long time that NHS has a series of different pensions issues that need addressing and that many of these are directly impacting on frontline performance. Frustrating how long this has taken to solve at national level....
/11 ...However, positive that national leaders are now doing all they can to address these issues. @NHSEngland right to identify that election means no long term solution available before winter so something else needed, at pace, to protect winter performance.
/11 Today's announcement looks to be best, immediate, must do something now, solution available. We will want to assess member reaction but there are some important issues here, which we have shared with @NHSEngland and @DHSCgovuk, which must not be ignored.
/11 If objective of today's pensions announcement is to maximise senior clinical time this winter, delivering objective will depend on reaction of thousands of individual senior clinicians to this approach. I wouldn’t presume to guess what reaction will be but…...
/11 Trusts worry that degree of current NHS pressure is burning out overworked NHS staff who are increasingly reluctant to work extra hours…often to protect their own health and wellbeing and because they simply can’t give any more, whatever pension solution is offered...
/11 Trusts report lower take up of previous pensions workarounds than hoped for/expected, even when implemented early & lots of support given to maximise take up. Highly complex with each individual circumstance different. So no guarantee this one will work, though hope it will
/11 Trusts have told us they are nervous about implementing short term workaround pensions solutions that could have currently unforeseen long term impacts / liabilities for which they could be responsible. Though helpful Government committed to no extra £ cost for trusts here.
/11 Trusts also tell us they are worried about implementing solutions that only benefit one group of staff – in this case highest paid clinical staff. Trust leaders responsible for all their staff and want solutions for lower paid staff and managers/leaders too.....
/11 Danger that adopting short term pensions solutions for one set of staff risks creating divisions with other groups. Striking how strong and numerous the comments on this issue - clinicians vs others - are on relevant @HSJnews comments thread: hsj.co.uk/workforce/shor…
/11 So although today’s pension announcement is best
available short term, temporary, rest of 2019/20, option, NHS desperately needs holistic long term set of solutions for pension issues of all staff
groups..as @NHSProviders has been arguing, largely alone, for last 6 months.
