If you, like me, are a queer person who saw something about a Netflix “queer” holiday film, let me save you the time: Let It Snow is a terrible traditional romantic film with almost no plot set on Christmas Eve that happens to have 2 queer young women characters. Spoilers ahead.
The film has a great cast whose talents were utterly wasted on literal nonsense garbage. It’s like someone took Love Actually, made it teenagers, took away connective tissue between storylines & mostly removed character development & motivation.
One of the sub-plots has a supposedly senior HS student who looks 12 “falling in love” with a 20 y/o pop star who apparently has no family or friends at all. Actually, there appear to be almost no adults in the town anyway. Why are all these teenagers roaming on Christmas Eve?!
One character says her mom doesn’t want to be with her on Christmas but it’s literally never explained why she just has no adult or family presence at all? Also, she seems to suck for no reason until the end when she is magically redeemed. As are the mean popular girls.
There is a character who wears tin foil and drive a tow truck & is sort of the Magical Negro, except white and maybe disabled. We know nothing about her at all despite the film setting up lots of questions about her. Her character is a red herring.
All romantic sub-plots are awful, but the worst one culminates in the most over the top, barfy declaration of unhealthy, predictable heterosexuality I’ve seen in a long time. I literally booed out loud at the TV.
Why in 2019 would we write a male character saying “I wanted to murder him” about another guy dancing with his crush & the girl responding positively to such a TERRIBLE NOT AT ALL ROMANTIC STATEMENT?!
The two queer characters get hardly any screen time & are equally as predictable & annoying as the other couples. They apparently exist in a world with no homophobia as well.
The film ends with an unsupervised teenage party with alcohol in a Waffle House type place where again, there appears to be no adults & nowhere these children have to be on Christmas Eve. Not weird, sad, or apocalyptic at all...
In conclusion, do not watch Let It Snow if you, like me, thought that somehow someone found a way to redeem the Christmas romance movie genre by adding queer characters. They did not. Do watch Let It Snow if you want to see a ridiculously bad movie that will make you groan & boo.
