In past week (11/18-25), 22 #HK protests, most small except for Save PolyU protests 11/18 involving 55,000. Protest numbers were down due primarily to District Council elections, in which 1,673,834 voted for pro-democracy candidates.

Overall, 662 protests, 11,348,806 protesters
#HK protests by month. Half a million people on the streets this month is still a lot, but down compared to previous months, 1 reason why previous to the District Council elections, #CCP & #HK govt believed they were making progress in crushing protests. Still 5 days to go in Nov
1 of the main ways #CCP & #HK govt have tried to crush the protests is by banning all marches since Sep8. Court injunctions, MTR closures, mask ban & police attacks on 'unauthorized' protests are also used. Govt regards almost all protests now as unlawful. bit.ly/2QO3cAK

Rather than ending siege of PolyU, police will enter campus tomorrow (Thu) to collect evidence & dispose of dangerous substances. They’ll encourage any protesters to seek medical treatment & take their details. After that, they’ll return campus to the uni. news.rthk.hk/rthk/en/compon…

In my area, fx, the pro-dem DC candidate carried out a survey of residents & built her platform on their responses. For many, it was the 1st time any politician had ever asked them what they thought. This is the beginning of shaping a new sense of community, empowering people &..
...showing people they can indeed participate in govt & drive policy. It’s this promotion of democratic culture & community involvement that pro-dem DC control should aim to achieve. It should be envisioned as part of our revolution, not just better business-as-usual.

#HK CRACKDOWN WATCH UPDATE: Police announced 325 arrests 11/1-3 in Facebook broadcast (after canceling press con). Once again, police didn't give overall arrest figure since 6/9. They haven't done so since 10/18. Based on my calculations, there have now been 3,392 arrests in all.
#HK CRACKDOWN WATCH UPDATE: 15 new protester defendants were charged in court yesterday (11/4), the highest single-day number in weeks. Now, in all, since 6/9, 464 protesters prosecuted, 232 for 'riot', 41 for assaulting police (up from 39 on 11/1); 31 remanded in custody.
Among the 15 charged in court 11/4 were 3 District Council candidates, w unlawful assembly & obstructing police, arrested at Victoria Park 11/2 when police teargased a peaceful gathering; one still in hospital after police pepperspray attack. scmp.com/news/hong-kong…

In 2012, Li Ka-shing openly voted for the scandal-troubled Henry Tang (who secured 285 votes), while Leung Chun-ying was only barely elected despite of Beijing's strong mobilization (who secured 689 votes).
In 2017, democrats and pro-local capital Liberal Party tried to stop the re-election of Leung Chun-ying by organizing ABC campaign, and Beijing defended its control power by replacing Leung with Carrie Lam (who secured 777 votes after abandonment of pro-local capital John Tsang).

The turnout for District Council elections this morning is absolutely unprecedented. The queue at my local polling station does a complete lap around the housing estate. I didn’t have to line up *at all* to vote in the last election. Demographics are a cross-section of society.
As promised, there are riot police here in militarised garb but they’re not masked, wielding shields, or pointing batons/other weapons anywhere so the equivalent of your neighbourhood bobby in today’s HK. In fact they’re on their phones—estate security are doing all the work.
Yesterday in Stanley was the first time in months I saw police in regular blue uniforms walking their beat on foot. It’s noteworthy that officers’ fear of doxxing isn’t based on the fact they’re policing but *how* they’re policing.

The pro-Beijing camp holds three-quarters of the seats, and has a majority in all 18 councils.

The turnout of the 2015 District Council election was 47 percent of registered voters. This figure - though far lower than the 58.3 percent turnout for the following year's LegCo election - already represents a significant increase on 2011's turnout.
