Thread: About 61% of total households in India used LPG for cooking in India in 2018, according to the latest NSO data.

This comes at a time when the government has touted Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) as a major success

Last year, the government had claimed around 90% LPG penetration across the country by December 2018. In fact, LPG penetration has reached 96.5 per cent in the country by October this year , according to the government.
The survey showed only 48.3% of the rural households used LPG and the share of rural people using firewood, crop residue and chip for cooking was almost the same.

State-wise usage: Odisha (32.6%), Jharkhand (32.9%), WB (42.8%), Rajasthan (48.1%), MP (48.3%), and UP (50.2%).
Despite a huge push for the PMUY, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in May 2016, about 11% households reported receiving any benefits related to LPG connections in the past three years from when the survey was conducted.

Why is there a mismatch?
Experts say it could well be because the rural poor might not going for a refill due to financial constraints & were not using the LPG connection.

But y'day, Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan told Parliament 87% PMUY beneficiaries have gone for a second refill till date.
So, what is the government's explanation to such a big gap between its own claims and what the NSO survey is showing?

Of course, people might by lying about receiving any government benefits :)
Here is what the data shows.
