It is a strange conundrum we face in India.

Purely going by statistics India seems to be better than many developed countries in terms of #Rape.

But the misoginy is so evident.

We r going through transition where women experience more 1/n

#Priyanka #Hyderabad #JusticeForRoja
freedom to work yet the ordinary Indian man has yet to come to terms with it.

Calling women 'whores', 'How much?' R still prevalent.

This disease is not uncommon across the world yet it only gets reported widely in India due to our sensationalist media.

We have to 2/n
While cases like this deserve all the attention one should remember that we r still majorly misogynistic n patriarchical.

Only way to get out of the malice is when women venture outside n this becomes commonplace.

And to deny that mass media n movies have no influence 3/n
is absolutely wrong. I mean the men have behaved like animals but we need to understand the psyche of such.

It is not the issue of rape alone. It is much deeper. Seldom do we address that aspect.

All the bluster is about killing the rapists. Absolutely do that. But what 4/n
Is more important is educating people early. Addressing the problem at the roots n preventing it is better than making blanket statements n trying to address the symptoms.

Fear of a death penalty is not enough. It subsides under the influence of alcohol/drugs n sheer 5/n
idea of patriarchy itself where the male has this superiority complex.

I am not trying to defend the rapists but I firmly believe it is a deeper issue to do with psyche more than anything else.

In any case this is not the last case tragically.

It is a generational change 6/n
dont expect outcomes immediately. But education on this in schools is a necessity or even through television/ mass media.

That counselling has to be done alongside strengthening law n order n legal system.

The approach has to be holistic. There is no other way out of this 7/n
Unfortunately. it is the only way. Societal attitudes wont change overnight.

It brings shame to me when my friends from abroad are taken pictures of without consent or just by the way creeps follow them or look at them.

I intervene but it is only temporary. A longstanding 8/n
solution is one that is holistic. Takes attitudinal change.

We r reactionary people n not responsive.

Its sad but realistically not the last.

Let us at least now come up with a comprehensive solution n not restrict it to #hashtags or sensationalism
