The tragedy of the Brexit referendum. A mandate for Brexit. But no mandate for any of the painful changes it requires.
Even pro-Brexit politicians know that. Which is why they end up ducking and postponing those choices.
It’s also why in my view it’s a good bet that the outcome of a barkingly tight negotiation with the EU will be complete cave-in by the UK, in order to keep as many of the benefits of membership as the EU will let us have.
