This is only a sample of the hideous cats’ cradle that are the UK 🇬🇧 immigration rules and the inadequacy of HO guidance.
The HO charges unbelievable sums for visa applications. Any business providing a comparable service would be in serious trouble with the law (“plain and intelligible language”?).
“Byzantine” complexity is deeply unfair - to Byzantine emperors. The Codex Justiniani is - even in Latin - much easier for an ordinary modern day reader to understand and get right.

An important point about Labour membership rules - what’s the latest date you can join and be guaranteed a vote for the new leader.
Essentially, the “freeze date” (the date you have to join by to get a vote) is at least 2 weeks after the approved timetable is announced (expected to be 7 January). So that’s 21 January.
According to Labour List (probably not scientific), this is the current state of play among *existing* members.

First past the post triumphs over the voting reality again.
Real results: pro-second referendum parties - 50.3% of the vote; pro Brexit parties - 45.6% of the vote (balance NI parties, majority anti-Brexit, so that is a bit generous to pro Brexit parties).

This is a story all about how immigration policy got turned upside down. I gave a talk recently about the proposed "Australian-style points based system" and this is the Twitter version (thread).
The Conservative manifesto plugs an "Australian-style points based system" several times but never defines it. Imagine proposing to scrap income tax for a "Malaysian-style percentage based system" but not explaining what that means...

So let me get this straight: Jacob Rees-Mogg, apparently so appealing that he's a plausible candidate for PM wrote in a letter to @Andrew_Adonis that ‘I do not believe there should be any special terms for EU migrants,’ 1/
And Rees-Mogg also wrote, 'Once we have left the EU there will be no legal basis to treat them differently from migrants from non-EU countries'. Now what would concretely happen if this were actual UK policy (e.g., in the absence of a deal) 2/
It would be absolute chaos. Millions of people would not be qualified to stay either because they earn less than 36k or their British spouse earns less than £18,600. Those people would then concretely be asked to leave the UK.
If they did not they'd be detained or deported 3/

On #Article50 day here’s a reminder of how things stand re citizens’ rights and what’s been agreed for @britishineurope and @the3million

Last week the EU & the UK ‘signed off’ on Citizens Rights, stating that they will now be protected, a claim repeated today by @DavidDavisMP
2. While true for those who live and work or are retired in 1 country (e.g. France) and do not wish or need to move across the EU to live or for work, thousands of UK nationals in the EU27 will be deprived of their right to earn a living legally under the terms of the agreement.
3. Here are the main areas of agreement:

Let’s take an example of a Brit living in France. Broadly, what he or she can expect under the agreement are: confirmation of rights in France and the possibility to acquire permanent residence or whichever legal status replaces it.
