This year I taught myself content marketing. Key learnings:
-The best content method is the one you can stick to
-Reddit is my top source for content ideas & distribution
-Consistent YouTube vids is the fastest way to a lot of exposure
-My best email signup conversion is webinars
More on Reddit: I spend time answering people's questions. My answers then become blog posts or youtube videos. Then when I see the same question repeated, I link to my content. I think more people should copy this strategy. Many people DM me & then I direct them to my email list
Another pro tip. I accidentally took over a Facebook group with 900 members. I was answering lots of questions and the admin asked if I wanted to be an admin since they didn't have time for it anymore. Boom! A new community with 900 people where I can post all my content!
Instagram had the worst conversion to my email list & I just couldn't be consistent with it. Blogging takes me a long time because I'm not confident with writing. Blogs also require a lot of promotion if you don't have a large audience. But YouTubbing has been easiest for me.
With youtube, you don't need to do as much promotion once you have a few videos. I made 7 videos in 6 weeks and the 7th one took off. And YouTube is not easy. It requires a lot of upfront work, but it's been the most fun for me.
Conversion for "office hours" or webinars is the highest & easiest email strategy for me. I've made lots of freebies, but those sign-ups trickle in, while a webinar is a quick way to dozens of sign-ups and requires no upfront work for me. I just show up. I'm now doing them weekly
Don't waste time with A/B testing and analytics. Just keep making shit. You have zero idea what will resonate with folks. I was constantly shocked by what took off and what was a flop. KEEP CREATING.
You never know how things will work out. I did a free webinar that 3 people showed up to. But good word got back to the Clinton Foundation and I was asked to develop part of their CGI U curriculum required for their 600 students, in which I plugged my other content.
I attempted @Medium but got nowhere. It's so much fluffy, filler content nowadays like, "5 ways to be happier". It was too much work to get curated and promote myself there. Not a great platform for getting discovered anymore.
@Medium My challenge now, having too many brands & diff email lists. I have my personal website/blog laurenvaldez.com getting the least amount of love. winafulbright.com has a strong blog presence & Reddit/FB community. YouTube w/ very diff audience youtube.com/channel/UCALmL…
@Medium Also I value simplicity over anything. @Mailchimp is way too much effort to set up lead magnets and split my list and I can't afford @ConvertKit. I just started using @MailerLite's free version and like it better than my $8.99 version of mailchimp.
I misuse terms b/c I’m a novice. I’m not actually “content marketing” b/c I don’t have much to market. I am just creating content & trying to build my email list for when I do have something to market. But people keep DMing me for services, so I guess inbound marketing is working
I can't believe this thread has taken off. It earned me more than 90 followers in 24 hrs! Pro Tip: Make a viral tweet thread into a blog post to convert the energy into your email list. Working on it now before the momentum dies.
Anyone willing to read a draft of the blog post version of this? Warning it's close to 3K words. DM me.
