“No proof.”

2.3 million incarcerated.
5 million on community supervision.
$180 billion annually
Highest incarceration rate in world.
32 states have higher rates than next country.
1/4 pop of China. 500k more caged.
More jailed just pretrial than everyone imprisoned in India.
“African Americans are more likely than white Americans to be arrested & 6x as likely to be incarcerated for the same crime. In fact, if black & white people were incarcerated at similar rates, US prison population would drop by a staggering 40%.” nbcnews.com/think/opinion/…
“The $180 billion financing US criminalization could instead be allocated to improve infrastructure, invest in poverty alleviation and community building, and strengthen local schools in the communities most devastated by the war on drugs.”
“These costs only include arrest, prosecution & incarceration of individuals. They do not come close to calculating the lifelong health, economic & social damage caused by interactions w/ the system — damage that again has been disproportionately wrought on communities of color.”
“These negative consequences do not only affect those convicted of crimes. Despite the presumption of innocence, an allegation alone can lead to jobs lost or suspended, unnecessary ACS involvement and forced child separation, evictions from public housing and deportation.”
500k are jailed pretrial bc “they cannot afford bail. What is less often talked about is how wealth-based detention results in jobs and housing lost, school missed, bills left unpaid, people in need of caretaking left without caretakers and families devastated.”
“Conviction & incarceration rates say little about the lifelong punishments that begin upon release, fueled by 47k laws nationwide restricting critical rights & opportunities like voting & access to housing, employment, benefits & college loans for those who touch the system.”
I’ll end with this. As @prisonculture has long been teaching, “mass incarceration” doesn’t adequately describe the hell cycle of poverty, punishment, & racism. Mass criminalization is more accurate.
We are the only country other than the Philippines that hasn’t outright *outlawed* the bail bonds industry.
