After a dinner with someone also dealing with elderly parents in medium to high crisis, I think back to @annehelen's excellent piece on millennial burnout and how much worse all this is all about to get.
@annehelen I mean the sandwich generation is real and nothing—not even the most hopeful M4F/free college scenarios is a panacea for it.
@annehelen All the structural reforms being discussed are good ones. But I also think we need to talk about collective retirement in a way that's not being managed by corporations also needs discussion.
@annehelen anyway, trying to manage kids and (especially remote) elderly parents is utterly flattening, even when you're not quite in the total shit yet, but know it's coming. Even when you have vastly more privilege than most.
@annehelen To be clear, re @annehelen's piece, I think it's going to get worse not only for my generation (GenX) but for hers (millennial) b/c while our smaller cohort is managing/paying up and down for bigger cohorts, hers is saddled with more debt.
@annehelen It is never too early to start talking with family, and friends, about how to construct a late-life (and certainly end of life) plan. Me and some of my friends are quasi-actively discussing figuring out where to group retire. There's no non-corporate/profit model but why not?
