Some thing I don't think we pay enough attention, when talking about single payer or a public option, is how often trans health care is held up as the poster child of "But we can't expect the taxpayer to pay for this!", even from liberals and progressives.
There's a hack that TV and movie creators do where they put something in a script or a shoot that they expect to be challenged by the standards people so they can cut it and show that they're willing to play ball, in the hopes stuff they care about will slide through.
Some of the most bonkers stuff in golden age cartoons is stuff that was written to give the censors something to do that slid through anyway.
The political version of this involves deciding not what content but which people to sacrifice, to show that you're not entirely unreasonable, to show that you recognize there must be limits.
And it's obscene.

Whether it's putting limits on who can get publicly-funded education because "look no one is saying the children of millionaires need a hand out" or putting limits on healthcare because ~*obviously*~ trans health care is a bridge too far, it means people left out in the cold.
And I'm grateful to @ExistentialEnso for speaking about this in a way I hadn't thought about before, and @Radstags for having done so much to highlight these important and vital threads I might otherwise have missed out on. It's a true blessing.
