Multiple people making the argument that they're probably not gay because the song is about isolation, loneliness, unfulfilled potential.

Yes? And in 1972, imagine two gay men trying to quietly enjoy each other's company. One of them's in the navy. And probably will be for life.
Since it came up: no, I'm not actually curious about what Billy Joel knows about the real people he met in a bar in 1972 and wrote into a song.

My question is what people think about the characters in a song they heard.
