As my three years in #Zimbabwe come to an end, I wanted to reflect on my experience as the @UKinZimbabwe's Political Governance Adviser in this inspiring, beautiful yet challenging context. A thread in 9 parts. 1/9
I've been here for some of the highs and lows of #Zimbabwe's recent history. From the hopes of Nov '17 and the 2018 Elections to the brutal crackdowns on citizens. 2/9
I now leave at a time of increased food insecurity and the risk of famine, worsening basic service provision, and deepening economic and political crises. 3/9
What is clear is that the Zimbabwean people deserve better. They are seemingly faced with a system of governance that is not sufficiently accountable, transparent or responsive to citizens. 4/9
Vested interests appear to dictate policy decisions, and as a result, poor people and marginalised groups have generally suffered disproportionately. 5/9
Despite this, citizens and civil society organisations have been at the forefront of the struggle for institutional improvements and greater respect for human rights and the rule of law. #HumanRightsDay 6/9
Hopes for positive change rests both on citizen's ability to use their voice and agency to generate the responsiveness and accountability that the country so sorely needs as well as Government's willingness and ability to reform. 7/9
#Zimbabwe has so much going for it: Amazing people, stunning parks and wildlife, great natural resources and incredible potential. I sincerely hope that it is able to turn a corner and flourish. 8/9
As my family and I depart, we are eternally grateful for the warmth, kindness, and friendship of the Zimbabwean people we met during our time here. We wish you strength and courage in the years to come. 9/9
@alanhood77 - yes you've already won the @UKinZimbabwe photography competition. But I couldn't leave without including an elephant picture in my farewell tweet thread.
