This isn't going to sway anyone's vote, but today's @ONS stats offer a timely corrective to the 'Britain is a hellscape, capitalism is a nightmare' narrative. Since 2001 (when the series began), age-standardised mortality rates in the UK have fallen by 25 per cent (!)
And this year, mortality rates have fallen to their lowest ever
In fact, many of the pressures on the NHS spring from the fact that we've got so bloody good at keeping people alive for longer (meaning that they end up suffering from multiple complex chronic conditions, which is way more expensive to treat and demands more bed space)
Likewise, people's happiness/wellbeing is - in most but not all parts of the country - improving on a steadily upward trajectory
I appreciate that 'Britain: It's Not Actually That Shit' or 'Market-Based Liberal Democracy Tends to Make People Richer and Happier' isn't as catchy 'Get Brexit Done' or 'For the Many not the Few', but it's true
