Today Indivisible is launching its presidential candidate scorecard. Scorecards are a powerful way to shape elections and say: these are the values that matter to us. Read this thread for more details, or jump to the website. scorecard.indivisible.org
How did we score the candidates? The scorecard evaluates three priorities that the Indivisible movement has told us (and we believe!) are important for beating Trump and saving democracy:
1⃣ Policy Platform: Indivisibles want a candidate who is committed to enacting bold, popular, progressive policies across a range of areas, including immigration, climate, economic justice, health care, and other critical policy issues.
2⃣ Day-One Democracy Agenda: None of the policy reforms we want to see in 2021 are possible without a democracy that responds to the people. Indivisibles want a candidate who is committed first and foremost to ambitious reforms to save our democracy.
3⃣ Building Grassroots Power: We know that change won’t come from any 1 leader - it'll take a movement. Indivisibles want a candidate who is committed to building grassroots power, as shown by their fundraising, support for other progressives & their engagement with Indivisibles.
.@ewarren scored the highest with @BernieSanders and @JulianCastro right behind her because she’s got both a bold progressive vision for our country and the day-one democracy agenda we need to make that vision a reality.
This is NOT an endorsement and these scores are NOT final; they’ll be updated as candidates make new commitments on the issues that matter to Indivisibles. We’d love for every candidate to get to 💯!
How’d we get here? We know that the primary is the time to leverage our movement’s power to make sure we have a nominee who is prepared to beat Trump and stand up for our values. So we developed a process for evaluating the candidates.
We started our primary engagement with the We Are Indivisible pledge. This pledge commits presidential candidates and Indivisible leaders to engage in a constructive primary and do everything possible to ensure whoever wins is elected president. pledge.indivisible.org
Then, this past August we held a national gathering of 300 Indivisible leaders from across the country who shared their feedback on the pros and cons of a movement-wide endorsement. The idea of a scorecard came from that discussion.
A few weeks ago, we sent candidates an in-depth questionnaire that we put together with input from Indivisible leaders and national partners. We received 7 out of 9 questionnaires back!
Candidates who were invited to participate in our evaluation process had to have signed the #WeAreIndivisible pledge and either made the October debate stage or ever had a positive rating from our movement in our surveys.
Then before the Thanksgiving break, we invited those candidates to talk with our movement via interviews with @leahgreenb and @ezralevin so we could directly ask them about the issues that matter most to our movement. (Watch them here: youtube.com/playlist?list=… )
Indivisible groups have been centered throughout the evaluation process. The scorecard was developed based on several conversations (and an online survey) with Indivisible leaders about what they wanted to see in a scorecard and how they would use it.
For candidates that did not complete the questionnaire, our policy team evaluated them based on their public record/statements. Additionally, we included other objective factors such as fundraising, engagement with the grassroots and more to create a holistic picture.
It matters who wins the nomination -- but whoever it is, we’re going to rally behind them to beat Trump. We launched the #WeAreIndivisible Pledge because all of us need to be all in to save our democracy.
Indivisible groups have already scheduled unity events for the weekend after the Democratic National Convention to kick off the fight to defeat Trump in the general election. Find one near you or even sign up to host your own here: pledge.indivisible.org/#lp-pom-block-…
