Who amongst us hasn’t taken meetings with a mobster now and then?
Look, I'm sure that when Trump hung out with Joey "No Socks" Cinque at Mar-a-Lago on NYE 2016 he gave him a stern, anti-corruption talking to. "Look Joey, as I've said a million times, I think corruption is terrible and you should cut it out. I want nothing. I want nothing."
Trump's long-standing mob ties are not breaking news. They just take on new meaning given his new rebranding as a "principled fighter against corruption." washingtonpost.com/opinions/are-t…
Just take a second to imagine if a candidate in a Democratic primary was exposed as having close ties to the mob that spanned decades. But wait...this is not just hypocrisy, it points to a key difference between the Dem and GOP electorate.
It was the very "law and order" **Republican primary voters** AND NO ONE ELSE who decided that Trump's mob ties were irrelevant. Not only is Trump utterly unconcerned about corruption, but so is his base.
And for every one GOP Trump voter who was unconcerned or unaware about Trump's mob ties, there was at least one who thought his corruption was a plus...a sign that he was a pugilistic realist, a "tough guy" who understands how the world really works.
Keep all of this in mind when you hear a Republican talk about how concerned they are about corruption, and how much they admire Trump's anti-corruption efforts. It's all just cynical BS and they know it, even if they are capable of denying it to themselves.
It probably goes without saying that the oldest corrupt trick in the book is to use shady means to successfully pin a charge of corruption on your rival so as to get rid of them while keeping your own hands clean.
IOW, Trump's "anti-corruption" attack on Biden is the essence of corruption.
