The desecration of Jewish graves that occurs in both America and Europe has been ongoing in Jerusalem for decades. It began under the Jordanians and continues under the Palestinian Authority.

The Mount of Olives is the oldest continuously used Jewish cemetery in the world, going back 3,000 years. During Jordanian rule (1948-1967), the Jordanian army used the ancient tombstones for military camps and latrines.
In 1964 the Jordanians built the Hotel Inter-Continental Jerusalem on top of Mount Olives. The road to it was paved on top of Jewish graves and tombstones were made into gravel. Jordan extended the road to Jericho, digging up more Jewish graves.
Ancient gravestones by the tomb of the Biblical Prophet Zechariah were removed to expand the access road to the Arab village of Silwan. This isn't an accident. There are two purposes to this desecration of Jewish graves:
1) Desecration for its own sake. A statement of power and prejudice against Jews.

2) Destruction of Jewish graves, especially at the Mt. of Olives in Jerusalem, is the destruction of Jewish history, of evidence that Jews lived, died, and are forever connected to this place.
So when you see stories about the desecration of Jewish cemeteries, it's not just about vandalism. It is about 1) intimidation and 2) erasing Jewish history and identity.
Nota Bene - re desecrated graves in Prague.
