I don't think people are mystified. It's obvious the support is pragmatic. Non-evangelicals see evangelical support of Trump as confirmation of the stereotype of the Christian hypocrite, & evangelicals like myself who do not support Trump are disappointed with the opportunism.
Even if you believe Pres. Trump is being used by God (as all rulers are in God's sovereignty,) there is no scriptural basis for the kind of enthusiastic, proactive, uncritical, obsequious support that is shown by far too many evangelicals for Pres. Trump.
Nathan, John the Baptist, the Apostle Paul, Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego - they publicly called rulers to account for ungodly behavior, and they were all under totalitarian/monarchical systems of gov't.
In this country, we have tremendous freedom to speak the truth and hold rulers to account without fear for our lives, and yet we time and again bite our tongues over inexcusable behavior to keep the judges coming and keep our churches "protected"?
To whom much is given, much is required. We should use the freedom we've been given to speak the truth regardless of the consequences, and we'll richly deserve it if someday we lose that freedom because we squandered it.
"For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world [or a country, or even an election], and lose his own soul?"
