I spent a day in western Uttar Pradesh in a qasba where Muslims say they did not even come out to protest against the Citizenship Act – and yet they faced lathis and bullets.

Watch the women chillingly describe the police raids on their homes.

Two young Muslim men were killed in Nehtaur town.

One of them spent all his time preparing for the Civil Services Exam, his family said.

They showed me his room full of books and guides.

Here are some images from the homes of Muslim men arrested by the police.

Their families have questioned why the police felt the need to smash all their belongings – even a toilet pan – and one family accuses the police of stealing their money.

This video shows an elderly man being dragged away by the police while a lathicharge was underway.

His name is Shamsuddin. He is partially paralysed.

It is not clear why he was arrested.

Towards the end of the video you can hear a gunshot. scroll.in/article/947626…
This report is from Nehtaur in Bijnor district.

At the police station, I was told 23 policemen too were injured in Friday clashes. Beyond this, officials not willing to respond to questions.

Bijnor SP did not take my calls or respond to a text message.

Update: Bijnor police told Indian Express that four policemen sustained bullet injuries. The police claim that an injured constable fired and killed a 20-year-old man in self defence.

His family alleges he was picked up and shot dead.
