Thread #India #UttarPradesh In Muzaffarnagar, a woman told us how her home had been vandalised by the police in the dead of the night. Their car, windows, mirrors, electronic appliances, crockery all broken. Jeweller, cash stolen.
She says police told her and her family to leave, and that her home would soon become theirs. She says there were also some people in plain clothes with the police. She says #Muslim families are living in terror in #UttarPradesh
Photos from another home in the neighbourhood. They also told us police barged in at night and broke everything. We heard similar stories in every #Muslim locality we went to. #India #UttarPradesh Police have denied the allegations & told the BBC they've recd no such complaints
We also met 3 minors who say they were detained and beaten by the police. Two had their hands broken, and all had wounds on their backs and legs. Most were too scared to be photographed. This mother holds up the bloodied shirt her 14-year-old son was wearing #India #UttarPradesh
Her 14-year-old son says he was accused of throwing stones & told to say the names of Hindu Gods as he was being beaten by police. He says his religion was abused.Among other injuries,he has a burn wound on his hand which he says was inflicted with a hot rod #India #UttarPradesh
When my colleague @ArunodayM asked Sanjeev Balyan, BJP MP from Muzaffarnagar and union minister, about minors being picked up, he said he himself saw 12-18 year olds participating in violent protests, and so the police had to take action against them. #India #UttarPradesh
In Muzaffarnagar, Meerut, Bijnor and Kanpur, the BBC has met the families of those who died in the protests. 19 were killed in #UttarPradesh All were civilians, most had bullet injuries. This is the elderly mother of Mohammad Mohsin who was shot in the chest.
Police say they didn't open fire, but that some among the protesters had guns, and that those who were killed, were hit in crossfire. Police say the protesters started the violence. #India #UttarPradesh
Several videos have emerged that raise serious qs about police behaviour. This CCTV footage is from a shop in a Muslim locality in Meerut that shows police trying to break the camera. #India #UttarPradesh
Posting @muzafarnagarpol response to twitter thread. No response to the allegations of vandalism and looting here. In @Zubair_BBC interview they had said they had received no such complaints.
