OK, I learned something. I thought I was being cutting-edge by mainly reading ebooks. It turns out that this is a boomer thing, and younger people prefer paper! 1/ vox.com/culture/2019/1…
Fwiw, I don't do ebooks mainly for either the adjustable type size or not having to go to the bookstore. I do it because I move around a lot, and find it a lot easier to travel with a 182-gram library of hundreds of books than a 10-pound stack of processed wood fiber 2/
Also, pro tip: pdfs of technical papers — or review copies of new books — tend to be unreadable on the Kindle, but generally work just fine on an iPad. 3/

Ordinarily, the right has infinite faith in the creativity and adaptability of the private sector. But it somehow believes that businesses would simply curl up into sobbing balls if faced with, say, a carbon tax — as opposed to finding innovative ways to respond 2/

I am not at Davos (thank God). I have, however, been seeing snippets, including Steve Mnuchin still claiming that the Trump tax cut is paying for itself. So this seems like a good time for a brief thread on tax cuts, zombies, and cockroaches 1/
A zombie idea is a view that should have died long ago in the face of negative evidence, but just keeps shambling along, eating peoples' brains. The claim that tax cuts pay for themselves is the ultimate zombie; never right, never abandoned 2/
A cockroach idea is slightly different: it's a bad idea that you sometimes do manage to get rid of — for a while. But it just keeps coming back. (Note, since some people are sensitive about such things: I am not calling any individual a cockroach — just some of their ideas) 3/

Totally off topic and self-indulgent. But to my surprise I find myself disagreeing with Simon Wren-Lewis, who argues that high housing prices are all about low interest rates and that supply constraints aren't important 1/ mainlymacro.blogspot.com/2020/01/eviden…
I guess this could be true for Britain. But it's absolutely not true for the US, where there has been huge divergence between metro areas that all face the same interest rates. Real house prices in SF and Atlanta 2/
The difference is that housing supply in the Bay Area is constrained, partly by geography but mainly by NIMBYism, while Atlanta has highly elastic supply. Hard to see why similar issues wouldn't apply in the UK 3/

vox.com/culture/2019/4… I think this read of “The Long Night” is right. GRRM has always criticized Lord of the Rings for suggesting that the big battle against evil created a lasting peace between squabbling factions. That isn’t how people work, though.
Another thought: I think a lot of critics got it into their head that because so many #GameofThrones deaths were shocking, their value was in shock value. But it's not true. Major deaths were always tied to the theme of "politics is hard" and "actions have consequences".
The Night King killing Jon wouldn't really be like the Red Wedding or even Jon's first death. Both were direct results of the characters trying to do the right thing and failing because politics is hard. The story, it seems, was always about politics.

Simply by selling an instrument that decays in value over time, doesn't give one an edge towards profit. It is accompanied by short gamma and rising #volatility working "against" you.
