END OF THE YEAR THREAD:
Just want to thank everyone in this incredible community for all of your hard work for the last year and, really, the last 3+.

For something that was supposed to be a 2 week experiment, this has turned into something incredibly significant.

Some big things have happened with Sleeping Giants this year, including finding out what happened with Breitbart after advertisers actually became aware of the site that they were inadvertently supporting.

Thanks to @aliklay & @TheBrinkFilm for this footage of Bannon, BTW!

Tucker Carlson continued to lose dozens of advertisers after the Sleeping Giants community asked them if they supported his comments on immigrants making our country “poorer and dirtier.”

Bank of America stopped investing in private prisons after incredible work by @nandoodles and the Sleeping Giants community in asking them how, in the wake of reports of abuse, the bank could support them.

And there have been a number of other efforts this year that have been hugely successful because of your ideas and work.

The truth is, though, that the roots of the problems we’re dealing with aren’t going away. They’re cooked into the system.

Companies like @Google @facebook @YouTube and @twitter are still havens for hate, harassment and disinformation and it doesn’t appear that they’ll be changing.

Unfortunately it takes a campaign like this and hard working journalists to raise red flags for anything to get done.

This is a tremendously hard job, to be honest.

It takes up a ton of time.

There’s no pay.

There are constant attacks by people who don’t agree with what we’re doing.

There’s no playbook to figure out what to do next.

It has gone on far longer than ever expected.

This is probably not sustainable over the long term, but hate and disinformation, amplified by social media companies and monetized by advertising platforms, are not going away anytime soon.

With no oversight or regulation, the system is going to keep operating as it has been.

So, while it would be great to take some time off of these terrible platforms, we’ll keep grinding away.

We’ll make good calls.
We’ll fuck up a lot.
We’ll have wins and losses.
But we’ll keep going if you will.

It was pointed out to us by the amazing @mle_goldman that BofA is no longer providing credit to private prisons instead of no longer investing in them. Our bad. Still good, though.
