Let It #Bee

An overview of why bumblebees, solitary bees and #Honeybees are disappearing at increasingly alarming rates. What are the politics? Most importantly, what can we do to help?

1/
Scientists agree that #HoneyBees are going extinct mainly due to excessive use of pesticides in crops with “beekeepers reporting heavy winter and even summer losses.”
2/
There are multiple factors affecting an ecosystem that sustains pollinator health.

Pesticides leave compromised immune systems more open to diseases and parasites.

Commercial Farming leaves them similarly depleted and susceptible to disease.
3/
Habitat Loss diminishes their food source and “places to nest are disappearing.”

No list of causes for rapid species decline is complete without considering the effects of climate change on all these factors.

The Politics of Bees

According to beeculture.com,
Beekeepers are suing Trump’s EPA for allowing a bee-killing pesticide back on the market. The lawsuit comes as beekeepers around the country lost over 40 percent of their colonies this last year.”
5/
“Honeybees and other pollinators are dying in droves because of insecticides...yet the Trump administration removes restriction just to please the chemical industry,” said an Earthjustice attorney. “This is illegal and an affront to our food system, economy, and environment.”
6/
The good news is - everyone can help save bees! You don’t even have to spend money or leave home.
7/
Install a solitary bee house to help solitary bees.

Leave a patch of bare earth.

Include a wide variety of flower shapes.

Select plants high in nectar & pollen.

Provide a source of water for bees.

Here’s another partial list of great suggestions from buzzaboutbees.net/Simple-Gardeni…

Keep your garden untidy, which makes more room for wildlife.

Leave a patch of closely-mown or bare soil in a sunny location, important for our many ground-nesting bees.
9/
Pieces of wood in a pile provide shelter and a place for solitary bees to nest.

Dead plant stems are the perfect spots for the young of other native bees to overwinter.

Keep the dandelions. Pollen and nectar are especially accessible to bee species throughout the year.

People almost everywhere can help keep our bees healthy. Join us.
