If we are to survive the rest of this century, we'll need an entirely different mindset. We need to see the living planet neither as a dustbin nor as a treasury to be looted, but as a wonder to be defended and restored.
We need to abandon the extractivist worldview, which sees our highest purpose as to grab all we can, to fill our boots before anyone else gets it. Instead we need to become the nurturers both of nature and of each other's wellbeing.
The catastrophe in Australia today offers us a terrible glimpse of the future for many parts of the world, if we don't change course, immediately and radically. Let's not be the ancestors our descendants will curse. Let us be the people they respect.
