If not for the Christmas holiday season, when SA has very low electricity demand, but a normal demand SA would tomorrow complete the first full month of load shedding which would have mainly been between stages 4 and 6! Eskom could dump the SA economy in deep recession. 1/6
While not 100% accurate I believe that at stage 4 for a month (average) SA economy would lose at least 2% of GDP for every month of this. Could be as high as 4,5% or even over 5%! Yes, GDP decline of at least 6% & perhaps 16.5% at current rates of unplanned breakdowns. 2/6
At those rates of decline, SA will lose hundreds of thousands of jobs and the knock-on impact for Africa's most industrialised and sophisticated economy will result in higher poverty, unemployment and yes inequality. 3/6
It is unlikely in any case that SA will have a January without load shedding and it will likely last long enough to dent the economy. This may then result in a 3rd consecutive quarter of decline. over 60 million victims for the false enrichment of the few. 4/6
less than 1000 people directly benefit from the highly inflated coal prices Eskom pays and less than 25 000 employees need to be retrenched to save 60 million people from economic disaster. (incl neighbouring countries w SA power) 60 million vs less than 30 000! 5/6
Let's see where government stand with the 60 million-plus or with the enriched elite. If with the elite then SA will not make it out of this mess anytime soon. Choose wisely 6/6
