For the first time in the history of democratic South Africa, more adults did not vote than vote. The number of adults that did not vote was 20,8 million. That is twice the number of adults that voted for the ANC! 1/4
Political parties no longer attract voters. The largest 2 parties saw declines of 12% each in the number of people who voted for them. The ANC share of the voting age population dropped from 37.7% to 26% since 2004. 2/4
The DA increased from 6,7% to 9,4% since 2004 but fell back from 11,6% of the population in 2014! Yes the EFF and FF+ grew well and their share but in total parliament represents less of the total population than ever before 3/4
Maybe SA is growing up or more likely many people just do not feel that parliament works for them. Jobs crisis, crime, infrastructure and the daily grind are not addressed by politicians who are perhaps seen as only in it for themselves. 4/4
BTW of 45.9% of adults voted (1st time under 50%) and only 45,2% were valid votes and only about 43,5% of adults will be represented in Parliament. only 26% of adults voted for the government.
