[THREAD]
In 1963, a man renovating his home decided to knock off one of the walls of his residence, only to discover a mysterious chamber behind it.
The chamber appeared to be connected to a multi-layered network extending 60 meters (200 feet) underground. Located in the Derinkuyu district (Nevşehir Province), it was simply soberly dubbed the Derinkuyu underground city.
Between two and three thousand years old, the city seems to have operated as a fully functional refuge for persecuted minorities over centuries.
War after war, invasion after invasion, scores of refugees have found shelter between its walls, capable of hosting up to 20.000 people
The city was equipped with all sorts of amenities, ranging from storage rooms and lavatories to wine and oil presses, chapels, stalls, refectories and a religious school with a barrel-vaulted ceiling.
The city is party organised in a helix shape around a 55 meters deep ventilation shaft, which guaranteed proper air circulation and was probably used as a well
Huge circular stones were placed at key points and could be rolled across a tunnel to protect the dwellers from attacks
Over 200 troglodyte cities at least two levels deep have been discovered between the Kayseri and Nevşehir provinces.
You might read that such underground constructions form a continuous network that extends from Turkey to Scotland, but so far, this theory remains groundless.
