In the 45th District, Delegate Cheryl Glenn’s replacement will be chosen by the Democratic Central Committee.

This means our next delegate will need to win 4/7 votes of party insiders, and will not need to face the voters of the district until 2022. 1/
The 7 person central commitee is only elected in the D Primary which means they are not accountable to non dems and are not accountable to dems who don’t vote in the primary.

This is generously assuming that they are known enough to be accountable to Dem super voters 2/
The person these 7 people appoint to be delegate will have the power of incumbency, which means they will likely win the next election too, because among other things they can campaign and raise full money as a sitting delegate. 3/
Even more outlandish, the members of the commitee can and most likely will run for the position and they get to vote for themselves.

4/
It’s long past time we get past this spoils system where a delegate position belongs to the party and not the voters, where a handful of party insiders decide amongst themselves who will take the position of trust and power and where voters are left to just deal with it. 5/
We need to go back to the way it was until the 1930’s and allow the people to choose, not the party.

Special elections can occur in a variety of ways, but we must first agree that elections matter and that the era of party insiders picking favorites is over 6/
How we do special elections is a good question?
✅ presidential election cycles when an election is already occurring
✅ a day once a year for special elections
✅ each vacancy on its own.
While we debate the how, we can not afford to to debate the should. Let’s put the power in the hands of voters and leave small table anti-democratic central committee appointments behind as a relic of the 20th century.
