my working theory: Facebook needs desperately to bury pressure to ban microtargeting of election ads (see @EllenLWeintraub op-ed last month).
1 - deep fakes announcement
2 - sponsored content of elections team
3 - leaked Boz memo obfuscating history, value of targeting
this pressure has come from former/current employees, academics, politicians, competitors doing it (see Google, Twitter, Snap), etc. If FB does it, they're at war with entire Trump reelection campaign. Proactively changing debate is critical. Again, this is only educated guess.
I'm basing it on the last 48 hours of moves (and no surprise some stumbling) plus knowing where their third rail issues really lie. Also worth noting discovery has started on investigations, Cambridge Analytica docs leaking currently, etc so may be other pressures, too...
