2. After the expansive ambitions of the Bush era and the apologetic retreats of Obama days, President Trump seems to be charting a new course, recognizing threats to American interests as well as the costs of addressing them with violence.
3. It’s way too early to call President Trump another Reagan in foreign policy. Their methods are not the same—nor are their messages. Reagan spoke clearly and forcefully about the evil of the Soviet empire.

6. As on so many other issues, Mr. Trump as President seems to be adhering to the agenda he described as a candidate: to lead an America that is ready but not eager to engage in warfare.
7. In any case, even after taking out Qasem Suleimani with extreme prejudice, President Trump has invited the people of Iran to live in peace. For the time being, the Iranian Mullahs seem to be heeding his advice. May this become a durable stance.
