The grandest stupa in Afghanistan, 40 miles north of Kabul, has been restored from a pile of ruins. The universal shape of the 4th/5th-c structure makes it a perfect example of the coming together of Buddhism, Hinduism, Zoroastrianism and Islam in the beautiful country's history.
The Topdara stupa overlooks the site of Kapsia, the summer capital of Kushan empire, where Chinese pilgrim Xuanzang visited in 7th c, saying: "the stupas are of an imposing height.. built on high level spots, from which they may be seen on every side, shining in their grandeur."
Thank @adityanag2002 @Brent_Huffman for bringing my attention to the event. All images from achco.org.af/news?page=1; for more information about the site, see afghanistan-analysts.org/the-largest-st… Wish I can see the stupa in person someday!!
@adityanag2002 @Brent_Huffman By "universal," I mean the hemispherical dome on a base is characteristic of architecture in multiple religious traditions on the Silk Road: 5th-c fire temple (or palace) in Iran, 2nd-c BC Buddhist stupa in India, the famous Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, and Hagia Sophia.
To people upset over my mentioning Islam. Isn’t it true the stupa was restored by Afghan people, who are Muslims & living in a Islamic country? All religions have their tolerant & intolerant sides. Why can’t we celebrate the former, do away with our own ignorance & intolerance?
