I've been thinking of sport, sustainability and climate action. There's this @UNFCCC initiative, with a long list of participants : unfccc.int/climate-action…
and recent examples of sustainability initiatives in the sport industry,
sustainabilityreport.com
We also see unsustainable practices, for instance the use of helicopters to carry snow towards the lowest part of ski slopes : ledauphine.com/edition-gap-al…
And growingly frequent challenges for the health of athletes under extreme conditions of temperature, humidity, or currently poor air quality linked to extreme wildfires
For some sport events with high visibility, for instance the Dakar rally now running in Saudi Arabia, it seems that the level of ambition for environmental action has recently been reduced rather than enhanced (left, last year; right, this year).
Amongst "key figures", no mention of CO2 emissions, no mention of a strategy to avoid and reduce CO2 emissions, only funding of a forest conservation project in Peru. No mention of total CO2 emissions (from last year's website, an estimate of 15 000 tons CO2).
There is a small but growing number of athletes who express their views or react to calls for action, but a large potential for more leadership, and effective action to measure, report, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the sport industry.
