Trumps never miss an opportunity to punch down. Attacking Biden for his stutter is ableist and harmful to #disabled kids. FIVE PERCENT of kids go through a period of stuttering and 1% never overcome the disability. Still more have cerebral palsy &Tourette's. Vile.

Biden is a politician. This may make his stomach flip over as it did mine, but he isn't harmed by it. But I think of my friend's kid with cerebral palsy, how he struggles to speak do to his spasticity and #disability and how this gross #ableism harms kids like him.

That someone could work in a doctor's office for 20yrs and come away spewing such false and misleading claims is painful and speaks to our broken system. I have been writing about the health care crisis since 1993. Biases in health care against poor, women, POC are well-studied.
Women especially are turned away from ERs only to die from the incipient heart attacks they were having that didn't show standard (male) symptomology. I went to the ER with what was presumed to be bronchitis--and had a collapsed lung. Healthcare workers must put patients first.
If you are punching down at patients, and your concern is for the for-profit healthcare industry over patient care, please find a new profession. This hardly exemplifies compassion as a strong suit.

Before Trump, Saturdays at our house were for reading and listening to music. Now they are for activism.
In 2021, I look forward to a return to literary pursuits.
Printing out this list for the books on it I haven't yet read.
There are some lesbian writers on this list, notably my mentor Audre Lorde & the great Socialist activist Angela Davis, there should be more. I'd add Anita Cornwell, a groundbreaking black lesbian writer. I wrote this piece about her a few months ago.

I am also surprised Roxanne Gay is not on this list from our era, nor Phyllis Wheatly from the 18th century. I have taught both writers and recommend both for addition to this list. Everything Gay writes is tremendous and Wheatly was America's first published black woman author.

#NEW: NPR Moscow correspondent reporting rn that Jordan has tweeted that the #Ukraine flight was brought down by a missile. Tangential to this, #Zelensky is in Jordan and reportedly posting on Facebook that a criminal investigation has not been ruled out.

No independent corroboration that this #UkraineAirlines crash is anything other than a tech disaster, but the timing has raised questions.
The flight was reportedly on fire and then exploded into a fireball. None of the 176 survived.
These details are not inconsiderable under the current circumstances. Also NPR reported this flight was not one of the 737's under review.

A little back story, I seduced my boss because of petty rivalry with my colleague. I trailed the man, joined his gym and worked out religiously till it was time to carry out my plan. My friend was my chief supporter.
I got to the gym super early but my Oga, let’s call him Badmus, was nowhere to be found. I waited for almost an hour and still, nothing. Fayo dropped me off at the gym and went back home to get ready for work. She called at intervals to find out if he had arrived.
“Where could he be now?” She asked.
“I don’t know o. I’m just standing here doing nothing. I can’t work out because of my make up. All these yeye trainers have raped me with their eyes.”

A thread for parents of young kids about something I learned this summer. Here goes… I’ve got a 10 yo boy. He’s a genuinely happy kid, which should be all you can ask for as a parent. But like most dads, that’s not enough for me, because like most dads, I’m kind of a dick. 1/x
It’s not enough for my boy to be happy; I want him to be strong. And brave. And tough. But here’s the thing: he’s still a little boy. He sleeps with his beloved monkeys. He’s scared to go upstairs in our house alone. Most days, it’s tough to get him to turn off SpongeBob. 2/x
And these things frustrate me. When is he going to grow out of those damn monkeys? What is there to be scared of upstairs? Why is he so lazy? 3/x

So many things that before/after weight loss testimonials claim they can now do are things I never would've done when I was thinner and more self-loathing, but can do now, as a fat person, after years of practicing self-acceptance: exercise, exist in public without shame, etc.
Wear clothes I like, have a peaceful relationship with food, not feel preoccupied with my weight, explore new places and activities, do things that are meaningful to me and assume, the entire time, that I am a pretty normal person with the same intrinsic value as anyone else.
Funny how that works. I never would have attempted ice skating when I was thinner and full of internalized fat hatred. But this winter, I not only taught myself to skate, I spent five hours a week skating just for funsies.

So I know we all have that *other* reason to be upset w/ CT right now, but for the love of all that is holy #disabled ppl have asked y’all to not only STOP using “differently abled” but also to stop centering the voices of abled parents of disabled kids who claim to speak for us
This article is actually a really good example of exactly how the abled parent perspective gets so much wrong about #disability and its intersections with theology.
This article has some good things, and it *sounds* super supportive of #disabled people, but really look at what is being said here:

Disabled people are important to the church because they teach us about our brokenness and need and lack.

It may not sound like a big deal.

But even if you learn to be emotionally detached from the constant barrage of criticism for doing benign, everyday things as a black woman?

You still have to navigate it.
Correct people.
Dedicate energy to ignoring them.
It's stressful.
And if you're #disabled? You need those energy reserves to LITERALLY be alive. Stress makes me sicker & you can't avoid it in life but you can try to minimize it.
You don't realize how much energy you expend just to stay alive, walk around, fix breakfast, take a shower, until you're sick. Even with the flu. And it feels like a herculean effort to sit up in bed and breathe.

Every day I go through that.
