It is interesting how a certain cast of Brexiter fails to spot the clashing dissonance between this sentiment (from Scruton, quoted with approval by @DanielJHannan) and the Brexit project.
And @DanielJHannan’s “of course” is here doing a *lot* of work. Which is the “faddish ideology”, and which is “wisdom”?
Incidentally, this quote from Scruton sums up why I am not a conservative.
Part of the problem is that in any actual society - and certainly in England at any time in its actual as opposed to romanticised history - different groups in society have different and conflicting “prejudices”: so Scruton’s definition of conservatism becomes incoherent.
It collapses into supporting prejudices just because they are the prejudices of those in power - or, in the case of reactionary conservatism, of those that had power and want it back.
