Picture a bus travelling at high speed in a snow storm - low visibility, very uncertain emergency stopping distance...
Driver (and passengers) have been advised that bridge over gorge ahead has collapsed. Maybe a km ahead, maybe only a couple of hundred meters. We can't see more clearly.
Not everybody aboard is agreed on exactly where we are trying to get too: but everybody is clear that we can no longer get ANYWHERE safe on the current route. Indeed, the driver himself has muttered (quietly) that this looks like an "emergency"...
The driver still has his foot flat on the accelerator, but switches on the PA. "Ahem ... hello... everybody... can I have your attention..."
"As you all know we have (entirely accidentally, nobody's fault) found ourselves are in an extremely perilous situation. Please don't panic. Stay calm. Trust me: I am going to take serious action RIGHT NOW to address the problem..."
"I am going to take emergency braking action, so please brace yourselves (a little)..."
"But rest assured that your immediate comfort is my primary concern, and, above all else, I'll make sure that I don't make the mistake of BRAKING TOO HARD. That would be TRUE DISASTER as it might STALL THE ENGINE..."
"Or cause UNDUE WEAR ON THE BRAKES..."
"So please just settle back, enjoy the view - and I promise we'll arrive at our (mystery) destination much quicker that you expected!"
"Over and out ... or is that out and over? WHOA ... WHAT'S THAT ... WHERE'S THE ROAD GONE TO .... WHERE'S THE EJECTOR SEAT BUTTON ... ARGGGGGGHHHHHH...."
