😂 this sort of overlooks the much significant w3c Tracking Protection working group which spent years deliberating, published guidelines in 2019 including for definition of “tracking.” Apple and publishers stayed until end while adtech tracking complex dropped out in protest.
If you study authors of CCPA, GDPR, and the moves of the browsers implementing actual tracking prevention (Edge, Safari, Brave, Firefox), they’ve all been influenced by the w3c work (good and bad) including how adtech lobby will abuse and create workarounds and who to trust.
I would argue the most material output was the definition of tracking which clearly includes Facebook and Google’s tracking. Safari, Brave, Firefox and Edge all treat Google as a tracker as it happens in a 3rd party context. CCPA does, too. Miraculously 😂 Chrome doesn’t.
Here is final specification for tracking protection expression. It was also written into ePrivacy Regulation draft and fits perfectly with CCPA law and @AGBecerra regs to reduce annoying browser notifications, maintain choice and align with expectations. w3.org/TR/tracking-dn…
Anyway, just flagging for adtech lobby heavily quoted these days which has amnesia about its fight to avoid any tracking prevention which led to browser innovation and regulations it’s now screaming about and pretending to use publishers as absent voices when they’re not at all.
