Political coverage has turned into media criticism, replete with an emphasis on seasons, narrative climaxes, and politicians as fictional characters. It removes the very real business of improving lives into the realm of spectacle. And it’s killing our country.
As we wade onto the impeachment trial we’re already seeing blanket coverage treating this like it’s a television show. As the case is made that the Constitution was violated analysts who know better are going to judge the vital proceedings based on whether they’re entertained.
McConnell understood this and is structuring the trial to use the media’s fickleness and desire for spectacle to cover up an attempt to undermine our elections and rule of law. It’s as infuriating as it is predictable.
