.@RepAdamSchiff outlines the 10 clear ways we know that Trump was out to pursue his own interests, not the country's, in Ukraine:
@RepAdamSchiff First: As Gordon Sondland testified, Trump only wanted the investigations *announced;* he didn't care about whether they were actually carried out—because their conclusion would undermine his conspiracy theories.
@RepAdamSchiff There are also notes from Trump's deputy (and legal-team member) Lev Parnas, which clearly say that Trump cared about the *announcement*:
@RepAdamSchiff And Bill Taylor's testimony that, as Gordon Sondland said, Trump wanted a CNN announcement that would put Zelensky in a "public box":
@RepAdamSchiff Second: "President Trump's agents who helped carry out this scheme confirmed that his desire for Ukraine to announce the investigations was solely for his personal political benefit."
@RepAdamSchiff Trump's own words, on both the July 25 phone call and the White House lawn in October, only confirm that he only cared about what Ukraine could do for him:
@RepAdamSchiff .@RepAdamSchiff describes how previous presidents have used their power on official phone calls with world leaders to do what is in the best interest of the United States ...
@RepAdamSchiff ... and how Trump used the July 25 call with Zelensky.
One of these things is not like the others ...
@RepAdamSchiff Third: Trump had his personal lawyer doing his bidding instead of U.S. government officials.
Giuliani's words speak for themselves on this one.
@RepAdamSchiff Fourth: As witness after witness testified, the investigations were not at all part of U.S. policy toward Ukraine, and they were stunned to hear him demand them on his phone call with Zelensky.
@RepAdamSchiff The decision to withhold aid not only was not part of U.S. policy; it was directly contradictory with that policy.
@RepAdamSchiff As witness after witness testified, there was "no good policy reason, no good substantiative reason, no good national security reason" for what Trump was doing.
The only reason was to help himself in 2020.
@RepAdamSchiff Not only that, it *actively threatened* U.S. efforts to fight corruption abroad, which would only further advance Russia's interests in Eastern Europe.
@RepAdamSchiff Fifth: Trump and his goons went out of their way to work through backchannels, avoiding the U.S. government apparatus as much as they could.
@RepAdamSchiff Sixth: Multiple witnesses reported in real time that Trump was abusing his power (and the White House is doing everything they can to prevent the American people from seeing the notes that resulted from their reports)
@RepAdamSchiff Based on the testimony before the House, at least six separate U.S. officials—Vindman, Hill, Morrison, Williams, Taylor, and Kent—objected to Trump's extortion scheme in real time.
@RepAdamSchiff Seventh: Ukrainian officials objected to what Trump wanted them to do, because they recognized that it would turn them into pawns in Trump's re-election campaign.
@RepAdamSchiff That includes Zelensky, who made it clear that he didn't want to do what Trump was asking of him.
@RepAdamSchiff Eighth: The White House did everything it could to bury Trump's "perfect" call, starting by releasing a summary that left out just about everything Trump and Zelensky actually discussed.
@RepAdamSchiff "If the call was perfect, if these investigations were legitimate, if the White House had nothing to hide, then ask yourselves, why did the White House readout omit any mention of these investigations?"
And why did they bury the records on a secret server until Trump got caught?
@RepAdamSchiff Ninth: Trump's own words, first to Gordon Sondland and later to the public, confirm that he only cared about the investigations into his political opponents.
@RepAdamSchiff This should not come as a surprise to anybody: Trump actively invited foreign interference in 2016, and there was never any reason to believe that, if not held accountable, he wouldn't do it again.
@RepAdamSchiff And, finally, 10th: Trump has never expressed concern about any kind of corruption in Ukraine except for the investigations that would benefit himself.
@RepAdamSchiff Over and over and over, Trump made it clear: The only alleged corruption in Ukraine he ever cared about where the conspiracy theories whose investigation he believed would advance his personal political interests.
@RepAdamSchiff In fact, before Biden announced his run for president, Trump repeatedly authorized aid to the government of Ukraine—then led by the actual people he now claims were corruptly working with Biden and against him—without *ever* publicly asking about corruption
@RepAdamSchiff If Trump had cared about corruption, why, on the July 25 call, did he attack the anti-corruption U.S. ambassador and praise a Ukrainian prosecutor general who the U.S. has repeatedly deemed to be corrupt?
@RepAdamSchiff Trump had multiple opportunities to actually discuss corruption with Zelensky.
He never did.
He only brought up the Bidens and CrowdStrike.
@RepAdamSchiff The White House even prepared false readouts saying that he *did* bring up corruption, all while he actually asked "Ukraine to do the exact thing American officials have tried for years to stop foreign governments from doing: corrupt investigations of political rivals."
@RepAdamSchiff To sum it up: Trump has "made it clear he didn't care about corruption. He cared only about himself. Now it is up to us to do something about it. To make sure that a president that this president cannot pursue an objective that places himself above our country."
