Haven't had a chance to dredge this up yet, but here's what Rep. Sensenbrenner (R-Wisc.) -- an impeachment manager in the Clinton trial in 1999 -- said about the need for witnesses at the time.
"Should the President's counsel dispute the facts as laid out by the House of Representatives, the Senate will need to hear from live witnesses in order to reach a proper and fair judgment," he said.

INTERESTING: First bipartisan question of the entire process comes form Sinema, Manchin, Collins and Murkowski.

Q: Can the WH assure that no private citizen will be deployed to conduct U.S. foreign policy unless sanctioned by the State Department?
NEW: Schiff proposes limiting witness depositions to one week, in order to alleviate fears of never-ending trial.
This would match the same period during the Clinton trial, when lawyers deposed 3 witnesses behind closed doors while the Senate resumed its regular business.

This discounts the possibility though of Trump invoking privilege to block a Bolton deposition.

This seemed like an important moment: Schiff rebutted it moments later saying the WH can call any witness it wants to fill in that blank.
Here's where Dems think the White House lawyers messed up:

Philbin said he couldn't answer Collins/Murkowski's question about whether Trump had raised Biden/Burisma before Biden was a candidate. It wasn't in the House record, he said. (1/2)
BUT... Minutes earlier, his co-counsel introduced this 1/27/2020 Daily Beast article into the record that was not part of the House's evidence.

Michael Purpura cited it as evidence Ukrain didn't know about aid freeze before Aug. 29 POLITICO article.

Welcome to today's #Trump #ImpeachmentTrial thread (potentially one of a few)! I've been playing around with tags a little in other tweets this morning but for now, I'm going to stick with the two I've used here. That may change later on, though. Follow/mute at will!
Today is going to be procedural stuff. The Senate will have to approve the (completely BS) rules proposed by McConnell. Dems will offer amendments, of course, but since a simple majority rules I don't have a lot of hope any of the amendments will pass. #Trump #ImpeachmentTrial
For those of you just tuning in, McConnell is proposing that this trial have:

Zero witnesses
Zero admitted evidence
Ridiculously little time set aside for opening arguments and questions.
As little sunlight as possible.
