Who are the new #BJP voters & what motivates their choice?

Pradeep Chhibber & I in our @StudiesIndian paper use @LoknitiCSDS survey and find that a new kind of ethnopolitical majoritarianism now binds BJP. This is distinct from the old Hindu Nationalist plank.

Thread (1/5)
Using the NES 2019 data, we created FIVE kinds of BJP voters.

The BJP's social base has now become broad-based & mirrors the Hindu society. The party has substantially increased its support base among rural, poor and lower caste voters. (2/5)
We argue that more than the immediate context of policies such as Ujjawala, Rally 'round the flag effect due to Pulwama, & BJP's resource advantage ... the long-term ideological shift marked by changes in the demographic composition of voters ... explains the BJP's rise. (3/5)
The main contribution of this paper is to show that - Hindu Nationalism, Ethnopolitical Majoritarianism, Hindu religious Practices & Conservatism are distinct phenomenons. They may have areas of overlap.

This differentiation is crucial to understand Modi's appeal. (4/5)
More than electoral victories & defeats, increasing party-identification with BJP is likely to have serious implications on the longevity of the new party system. (5/5)

- shift is ideological, not guided by govt perf. etc
- identifiers aren't swayed by short-term considerations
