2/ Yesterday, Nigeria's social & mainstream media were awashed with the announcement by @followlasg, banning the operations of commercial motorcycles popularly called Okada; tricycles (Keke Napep) & Bike Hailing Services in 6 LGAs, 9 LCDAs, 40 major bridges & 10 major highways.
3/ This latest ban, being the third time, from 3 successive admins in Lagos- @tundefashola, @AkinwunmiAmbode & now @jidesanwoolu came in what @followlasg has tagged #ForAGreaterLagos. Whatever this slogan means for the new admin of @jidesanwoolu remains to be seen fully by 2023.
4/ I've lived a greater part of my adult life in Lagos & toured many inner-city roads. The truth of the matter remains that given the HUGE RESOURCES available to @followlasg, since 1999, it's yet to meet expectations on interconnecting Lagos & fixing its chaotic transport system
5/ Being a cosmopolitan city & commercial hub like the Londons, Chicagos, New Yorks, Washington DCs, of this world, 21years after the return of democracy, @followlasg should have been able to resolve the chaotic Lagos transport system. HOW? Read further...
6/ HOW? 1. Since 1999, one would have expected @followlasg to have invested more heavily in ensuring all roads in Lagos are PAVED, including inner-city roads, even roads leading to farms & industries sited across Lagos.
7/ 2. One would have expected the agency of @followlasg whose responsibility it is to maintain roads, is better funded to ensure the existing PAVED roads are not riddened with potholes, craters and gullies.
8/ 3. Since 1999, tax payers ### that have allegedly ended up in private pockets would have been used to ensure that ALL roads in Lagos are PAVED and MAINTAINED as a MEGA CITY. Ironically, @followlasg till date, has refused to give Lagosians, et al, a copious peep into its Budget
9/ 4. It is not yet late. The current admin of @jidesanwoolu, if he loves Lagosians more than his personal aggrandizements, should rise up to the occasion to stop the age-long diversion of tax payers ### running into trillions, and put such into use for the good of Lagosians.
10/ 5. When these tax payers ### running into trillions are no longer diverted into private pockets, nothing stops ALL Lagos roads, including inner-city roads, roads leading to farms & industries from being PAVED, like cosmopolitan and megacities world over.
11/ 6. When these tax payers ### are no longer diverted, nothing will stop @followlasg from not completing its landmark Light Rail Project, ongoing since 2009 (11years), along the Lagos-Badagry corridor. The chaotic gridlocks on that corridor will VANISH with a railline in place.
12/ 7. If tax payers ### are no longer diverted, nothing will stop @followlasg from connecting the inner-city parts of Lagos with rail lines. It is a known fact that @followlasg do not have to depend on ABUJA to survive. The world has been told this, since 1999.
13/ 8. If tax payers ### are no longer diverted, nothing should stop @followlasg from investing more through capital projects and public sensitization, to make its Water Transport System programmes, come alive. This is 2020 for goodness sake. @followlasg should DO MORE.
14/ 9. Yesterday, I saw some undated and unsourced infographics shared by the @Mr_JAGs, SA New Media to Gov. @jidesanwoolu on accidents, deaths caused by Okada riders, prompting the latest ban. But what about first fixing the issues abovementioned, which gave rise to Okada/Kekes
15/ 10. What about making Lagos roads UNCHAOTIC & SAFE for all, by fixing the age-long Tankers/Trailers Menace across major highways, bridges and inner-city roads in Lagos. Go through @vanguardngrnews, @thesunnigeria, @THISDAYLIVE, @BusinessDayNg editorial contents, you'll WEEP.
16/ 11. What about making Lagos roads SAFE for all, by decentralising Drivers Licensing for all automobile operators, as it operates in the United States. Why can't @followlasg, other 35 States, & Abuja, have their own Drivers License Facilities with individual programmes?
17/ 12. In the U.S., every state has her own drivers license and programmes to getting it, thus, ensuring their roads are SAFE for all. There are also punitive measures to deny you driving privileges if you commit some forms of offences. @followlasg, et al, can domesticate same👇
18/ 13. @followlasg should invest more on ROAD SIGNS, MARKINGS. Across the U.S., for instance, automobile operators have easy rides as Roads have MARKINGS dividing lanes, signs for POSTED SPEED LIMITS, TRAFFIC LIGHTS, INTERSECTIONS, STOPS, YIELD, TURN LANES, ROAD NAMES etc.
19/ If @followlasg do its own part, as pointed, PAVING all its major roads, including inner-city roads, roads leading to farms & industries, then linking them up with a more efficient buses, rails, OKADAS, KEKES, RICKETY DANFOS, etc, for commercial purposes will VANISH OVERNIGHT.
