The @nytimes wrote an editorial that slammed Trump's executive order. That's good, but at the same time, it was deeply problematic.

Over the last 24 hours I have not been able to stop thinking about these two images which are about a decade apart. One of these is @rachaelray and the other is @RepRashida Here’s why:
@rachaelray @RepRashida Just over a decade ago @rachaelray appeared in a commercial for @dunkindonuts iced coffee sporting the scarf in the image. After it aired, Dunkin Donuts was attacked by right-wingers in the blogosphere (this is a thing that existed before twitter)
These right-wing, islamophobic voices claimed Ray was wearing a Palestinian kaffiyeh and that by including it in their ad, Dunkin Donuts was messaging support for terrorism. They threatened to ...get this ...boycott.

What's the best lens through which to understand & combat bigotry; particularlism or universalism? This is not a new question though the debate around this, particularly as it relates to antisemitism, is heightened today. History offers warnings about how it can be manipulated.
This week @BernieSanders made an argument for the universalist approach; ie we can’t fight any form of oppression, including antisemitism, in isolation. Others objected, demanding a particularist approach.

This debate has run through many “controversies” that have afflicted activism or activists on the left in recent years. But that dynamic is not new either and it has reminded me of an episode I came across in research worth sharing.
