.@SenAlexander's craven surrender to Trump leaves our country exposed. He tells us our only mechanism of accountability is the election, while admitting Trump is guilty of trying to corrupt that election, and letting him skate without a full accounting.

@SenAlexander Trump's stance isn't really that his conduct was justifiable. That's irrelevant to him. It's that he did nothing for which he should be held accountable.

With this validated, there's zero doubt he'll now wield the government against rivals in worse ways.

Pelosi ripped up a speech. Trump is ripping up our democracy.

* Unchecked lawlessness

* Treats opposition as illegitimate

* Puts himself above accountability

In this context, the "decorum" debate is meaningless. New:

Media chatter about Pelosi ripping up the speech and the ongoing erosion in decorum misses the point.

It's a category error. Such breaches of civility aren't the threat to democracy here.

The real threat to it is Trump's daily anti-democratic conduct.

Trump treats the opposition as fundamentally illegitimate in every way, and places himself beyond accountability entirely.

Those are far greater threats to the functioning of democracy than that posed by breaches in civility like tearing up a speech.
